Do you know enough about apprenticeships? Young people rely on guidance from a variety of people when choosing a career that is right for them. However, parents and teachers play a particularly important role. This is why it is so important to understand what apprenticeships are, and what they offer. We spoke to Sam Harrison, our Learning and Development Manager, who shares a variety of important apprenticeship information for parents and teachers:
Apprenticeships, and how they are perceived, have changed a lot since I first heard about them when considering my career options in school. They have probably changed since you first considered your future, too. They were once considered the backup choice for those who did not enjoy school, or did not feel academic enough to go to University. But, the truth is that places on apprenticeship schemes are hard sought, as they offer such a great start to a professional career.
Sterling has a successful history of developing our apprenticeship scheme. We offer a variety of opportunities to study qualifications, including:
- Level 3 (A-Level equivalent)
- Level 4/5 (Foundation Degree/HND level)
- Level 6 (Degree – BEng)
Sterling apprentices benefit from a recognised qualification which is fully funded by the company. Additionally, our apprentices gain practical real-life experience, and also get paid. Even for the time that they spend studying at college! In addition to this, they are also entitled to the same holidays and benefits as any other Sterling employee.
Training partners and mentors
We partner with a number of OFSTED reviewed local training providers. We also work closely with nearby organisations such as the Apprenticeship Ambassador Network and Science Industry Partnership. This allows us to constantly review, develop and provide a competitive training programme.
Apprentices are supported by a tutor who is assigned by the training provider, as well as a designated workplace mentor. They will also be surrounded by experienced employees, all eager to share their knowledge and experience. Sterling offers an exciting and innovative real working environment for young people to learn and develop within.
This year we are offering a number of opportunities to join our significantly growing pharmaceutical company. We are looking to recruit for opportunities within:
Business Administration (supporting Engineering/Production and our commercial teams) x2
Maintenance Technician (Engineering – Electrical and Mechanical) x2
Bioplant Manufacturing (Waste Water Treatment plant) x1
Human Resources (recruitment, learning and development, general HR related activities) x1
Warehouse Business Administration (movement of materials coming in and leaving plant) x1
We encourage applications from young people who are studying, or have completed, their GCSEs (National 5) or AS/A-Levels (Highers). As an equal opportunities employer, we also welcome applications from mature candidates looking to change careers or industries.
Typically, we look for a minimum of GCSE English and Mathematics grade 4 and above (C or above). We can also support functional skills alongside their apprenticeship.
